The latest episode of the Chainsaw Man anime paid tribute to Himena in a way that struck a chord with fans – even as it saved the life of her partner and boy crush, Aki Hayakawa. (SPOILERS) Chainsaw Man Episode 12 picked up a cliffhanger that had fans sweating as it looked like villain Akane Sawatari was going to kill Aki with the same Ghost Devil that Himeno took after she killed her. Instead, Aki turned the tables thanks to a helping hand (literally) from Himeno and the Ghost Devil himself!
Sawatari has the Ghost Devil strangle Aki to death when Aki remembers something that Himeno taught him: that the Ghost Devil has no eyes and can sense fear – thus removing his fear allows him to approach the Ghost Devil and kill him without threat.
Aki’s memory of Himen and his zen-like state of mind is achieved when the ghost devil offers him a cigarette. A poignant flashback reveals how Himeno tried to seduce Aki into smoking his first cigarette, only to discover that he was still under the legal smoking age. Himeno promised Aki that he would keep the cigarette and smoke it with her when she came of age. The cigarette that Aki gets from Ghost Devil has “Easy Revenge!” written on him, and he corrects this message by killing the Ghost Devil and arresting Sawatari (with the timely help of Kobeni Higashiyama).
Himeno made a deal with the Ghost Devil to use one of his many invisible hands in battle in exchange for one of her eyes. However, when the Tokyo Devil Hunters were ambushed by the Gun Devil’s gang and Sawatari and Katana Man had Aki and Chainsaw Man on the ropes, Himeno had to make a more drastic deal to harness the full power of the Ghost Devil. Himeno literally gave the rest of his body to the Ghost Devil and disappeared, leaving behind an empty set of robes as a fallen Jedi Master. The sacrifice was ultimately in vain as Sawatari used the Snake Devil to devour the Ghost Devil.
…Eventually, Aki, Denji, Kobeni and the rest of the Special Division fix the karmic scales. Sawatari doesn’t last long in custody as Gun Devil has her killed by her own Snake Devil. Katana Man is taken into custody – but before the cops arrive, Aki and Denji stage their own trial, tying up the villain and kicking him repeatedly in the groin, all in the name of Himeno.
