Chainsaw Man is back with a new chapter, and of course the manga has delivered on its promise to shock readers this week. After chapter 122 left us hanging on a cliffhanger, Tatsuki Fujimoto reunites readers with Asa this week as she faces a new devil. We’ve learned the true identity of the fiend who caused the mass suicide attack, and they’re one of Chainsaw Man’s most disturbing foes yet.
For those desperate to know, Chainsaw Man chapter 123 reveals that the creature is the Falling Devil. The villain appears to be one of the Primeval Fears, as the Famine Devil warned Yoshida that such a threat was coming. Now the Falling Devil really flexes his power and it’s terrifying to say the least.
“The lower the heart falls, the higher the body falls. That’s the concept of this dish,” Falling Devil says as they compare themselves to the chef. “Let the taste of past traumas please your taste buds.”
Well, there you have it. The Falling Devil is humanity’s primary fear, and its power allows them to feed on negative emotions. When a person is feeling low, the Falling Devil can manipulate their victim into jumping off a ledge to their death. At the end of Chapter 123 of Chainsaw Man, we see the Falling Devil continue to use his powers to make bystanders feel high into the sky, where they eventually fall. And due to Asa’s depression, she gets into this mess with Yoru who can’t help her.
Unlike characters like Gun Devil, this new enemy isn’t exactly bloody, but their psychological warfare is on another level. The Falling Devil has the power of primal fear and makes it even more powerful by feeding on humanity’s depression. In a world filled with devils, you can hardly blame civilians for feeling bad 24/7, and their drained emotions give Falling Devil the fuel they need to easily fuel the bloodshed.
