Chainsaw Man explores some wild territory in the pages of his gory manga. With Denji sitting on the sidelines while new protagonist Asa Mikata takes the reins, War Devil could have some serious power at his disposal, but a looming threat is toppling the power structure of this enlightened universe. With the introduction of a concept known as “Primal Fears” in the manga series, Asa will have more to worry about than his plans with Denji. Be forewarned, spoilers for Chainsaw Man Chapter 122 are coming.
The beginning of this latest chapter of the Chainsaw Manga may send readers for a loop as Yoshida comes face to face with the Primal Fear known as the Famine Devil, who takes the form of a high school girl to hide his true power. In an effort to learn more about the power of the threat coming to the world, Yoshida details a recent experiment conducted by the Public Safety Commission. In this test, which took place before the events of the Chainsaw Man anime, a government organization was trying to find out if Nostradamus’ prediction of the coming doomsday was accurate, and as Yoshida details, it could be:
The Primal Fears Come
“From the prophecy of Nostradamus in the seventh month of the year 199, a great king of terror will descend. He is attracting attention for predicting the end of mankind. Society sees nothing but sensationalized television and exciting students, but public safety believes otherwise. In an experiment, they had thirty convicts make contracts with the Future Devil under the condition their release. Then Public Safety made them ask when they would die. Surprise, surprise, Future Devil predicted that twenty-three of the thirty would die in July 1999.”
It would appear that the remaining seven of this prophecy were to die for Denji and company next week, meaning that the arrival of the Primal Fears had already begun and was about to be something terrible. Despite Asa’s power as a war fiend, either this new threat that will cause a large number of citizens to take their own lives is too much for Mikata to handle. It’s laughable that Asa only has a ruler as a weapon, which she managed to turn into a sword, but she’s still trying to have a lot of trouble with one of the most disturbing devils yet.
